Vanta's Gap, also called the **Black Pit**, or **Oblivion's Maw**, is a pit located in northern [[Ibune]], and in which is located the city of [[Black City of Lirveg|Lirveg]]. It is the deepest open pit known on Erathia, with a depth of at least 1637 meters, and a width of 394 meters at its opening. It is made of a main vertical shaft named **the Maw**, with hundreds of horizontal branchings as well as dozens minor shafts running parallel to the Maw. Some of the major features of Vanta's Gap are the several waterfalls created by the underground rivers leading to the pit, as well as the several colonies of [[Lightflies]] populating the pits.
The Gap's geological history is unclear, even though several theories have been brought up regarding its origin. Its overall shape and erosion seems to indicate a natural formation over thousands of years, if not more. However, the nature of the stones forming the pit contradict this theory, as well as the absence of a major river under or above ground capable of such a feat. Other theories include an act of the [[Aspects]] predating the [[Age of Creation]], or that it is the work of [[Nefagol]], a mythical creature sometimes associated to the tales of the underground world.
The Black Pit is closely linked to the history of the region. For a long time, and until the middle of the [[Reign of Blood]] it was considered a location of ill omen, a maw ready to swallow those who ventured too close it, making it the ideal spot for the relocation of the prison-city of [[Kerpishane]] during the [[Early Reign of Blood]]. It's only during the [[Foul Wars]] that the prison-city was abandoned, before being reconquered by a group of [[Iconurgy|Iconurgists]] named the [[Risen]] in 761 RB. Ever since, Vanta's Gap has been the cradle of the city of Lirveg and its **|REDACTED|** population.
