The Sundering is an event mentioned in the [[Retelling]], considered to be a myth because of the lack of physical or documented evidence.
This event tells of the [[Aspects]]' decision to destroy the nation of [[Zotae]] because of the hubris of its population.
The story of the Sundering occurs in the [[Age of Insurrection]], between 6,000 and 8,000 years ago. During this period of upheaval against the Aspects, several philosophical movements saw the light of day. While some expressed their distrust in the Aspects, by exiling themselves on [[Hehikren]], away from [[Rhoening]] and the [[Aspectdom of Than|Aspectdom]], a group that splintered in the great plains north of the [[Trosua]] formed a kingdom where the worship of the Aspects was forbidden.
This kingdom, [[Zotae]] (from [[Vhalori]]. *zo* 'no' and *ihotae* 'gods'), grew in power and beyond the sight of the Aspects. The Retelling calls Zotae the 'first kingdom of humans to have mistaken the gifts of the Aspects for a weapon to be used against them'. In the text, it is said that some of the Aspects preached for the *Court of Voices* to show mercy for the Humans, for their ignorance was only the result of the Aspects themselves failing their creations. So the [[Aspects#The Burner of Souls|Burner of Souls]] sent an envoy to the very few in Zotae willing to listen to them, and warned them of what was coming, giving them until [[Aspectdom Calendar|Ruin]] to safely reach the mountains or leave the peninsula the kingdom was built on. Then, on Ruin, as planned, the Aspects severed the connection between Ibune and the peninsula, and sundered the earth until the waters took the land. Of the peninsula, only the highest peaks remain, a grave scar serving as an admonition to those who survived.
